BEHAVIOR ISSUES AND DISCIPLINARY OPTIONS

Small problems can grow, so be aware of them, and let the parents know your concerns. Parents can react defensively to difficulties at school, as in the case of a parent who attempted to defend his troublesome sixth grader by telling the teacher, “You don’t understand because you don’t have children.” Without hesitation my experienced colleague answered, “If that reasoning were true, there wouldn’t be any male obstetricians.” Then, they proceeded to work out the problem.

Teachers who lack management skills might resort to desperate measures to control a group, such as sarcasm, threats, or bribes. In fact, they may get things done their way out of the students’ fear of reprisal or loss of privileges.

It’s possible for a strict teacher to command a certain level of control, but effective teaching and learning takes place only when there is mutual respect.

Misbehavior falls into four main categories:

1. Action that is carried out by one student and does not affect anyone else (e.g., refusing to do class work).

2. Action by one student that affects one other student (e.g., taking someone’s pencil).

3. Action by one student that instigates group behavior (e.g., one student calling out, and the rest join in).

4. Actions of a group directed at one or more students (e.g., teasing, ignoring, or other types of bullying).
